Why I Don't Wear Deodorant

Yep, I don't wear deodorant. You probably think I am gross, but hear me out.

Sweating is a natural process that our body uses to either cool down or to eliminate toxins. We can use other means such as air con to cool down these days, however, it is still important for our bodies to excrete toxins. Use of antiperspirant deodorants means you are blocking elimination pathways and your body's attempt at ridding waste is failed, leading to an increase in the toxins within your body. There is also all of the chemicals that are present in antiperspirants and the potential health effects they can cause upon contact with your skin.

Toxin accumulation + unnatural chemicals on your skin = a great environment for a disease...

I have also recently seen a new 'stress deodorant' marketed lately as being able to prevent excess sweating during a stressful situation. This frightens me a little, and I'll tell you why... When we stress, our body's go into an alarm response, called the fight or flight response, which involves a series of reactions within the body that allow us to either fight or run from a stressor. Part of this is that blood supply throughout your body is altered in order to ensure that most of your blood is flowing to your muscles, heart and lungs, allowing you to be prepared to run or fight, but depriving other organs, such as those in the digestive tract. This means your digestion slows drastically, including your liver which is our body's main detoxifier. To compensate for the extra toxins, our skin then tries to pick up the slack by sweating more. 

Stress --> reduced blood supply to less essential organs --> reduced liver activity --> reduced toxin metabolism and excretion --> skin increases sweating to rid body of excess toxins

Instead of an antiperspirant (which I will admit that I do use on the rare occasion), I use coconut oil. I just rub it on my underarms like I am moisturising them. 
There is also a wide range of organic deodorants available at health stores if that is more your style. I have a few of these that I use as well. (Ones with antibacterial ingredients like lemon mertyl or tea tree work best if you are worried about smelling, as they fight off the BO-producing bacteria)

My husband made this of me a while ago and all my friends have a giggle at me but you will be surprised to know that you don't actually stink as much as you think you do.
